How APS Is Calculated

Step 1: Select Your Best Subjects

Most universities use your best 6 subjects (excluding Life Orientation). MUT uses only your best 5 subjects.

Step 2: Convert Marks to Points

Each subject mark is converted to APS points using the NSC conversion table above. For example, 75% = 6 points.

Step 3: Add Up Your Points

Add the points from your best subjects to get your total APS score. Check this against the minimum requirements for your chosen programme.

Step 4: Check Subject Requirements

Meeting the APS is not enough. You must also meet specific subject requirements (e.g., Maths Level 5 for Engineering). Always check both.

Frequently Asked Questions

What APS do I need for university in 2027?
APS requirements vary by university and programme. For most diplomas at DUT, you need 26–28 APS. At UKZN, programmes range from 28 to 48 APS. UniZulu generally requires at least 25 APS, and MUT programmes range from 18 to 36 APS. Always check the specific programme requirements.
Does Life Orientation count towards APS?
No. Life Orientation is excluded from APS calculations at all KZN universities (DUT, UKZN, UniZulu, and MUT). It is not counted towards your APS total.
How many subjects are used to calculate APS?
Most universities use your best 6 subjects (excluding Life Orientation). However, MUT uses only your best 5 subjects. Always check the specific institution's requirements.
What is the maximum APS score I can get?
The maximum APS depends on the university:
  • DUT: 42 (best 6 subjects, 7 points each)
  • UKZN: 48 (8-point scale, best 6 subjects)
  • UniZulu: 48 (8-point scale, best 6 subjects)
  • MUT: 40 (best 5 subjects, 8 points max each)
Can I still apply if my APS is slightly below the requirement?
It depends on the programme and university. Some programmes may consider applicants with slightly lower scores if spaces are available, but it's generally recommended to meet the published minimum. Consider applying for extended curriculum programmes (which have lower APS requirements) or contact the university's admissions office directly.
When should I apply for 2027?
Most KZN universities open applications for the 2027 academic year around March–April 2026 and close on 30 September 2026. TVET colleges open from 30 August to 30 November 2026. Apply as early as possible to secure your place.
